Random Rants

There's an article in Domain, which is a property listings and news service here in Australia, about a house getting a last minute heritage listing before going to auction.
Cue complaints from the property industry. Why? Because apparently it'd be worth $2 million more as a building site, than it is with a house on it.
The article doesn't disclose the address, but from the description given I think that it's this place.
So a large, attractive, 1930s house is worth more as a building site?
Just to make matters worse, the replacement would have probably looked something like this.
The property markets in Melbourne and Sydney are completely crazy. Everything is being sold on the basis of its potential value, rather than it actually is. It's been great for people who bought into it twenty years ago, but there's a generation who've been basically fecked by it.

Tell me about it. We live in one of the most expensive regions in Germany. I checked for 4 to 5 room apartments a few days ago and they are currently sold around 600.000€ and upwarts if they are newly built.
As people who don't have "ritch" parrents we are screwed and will never be able to own property in the city we live in.
Oh, and don't even get me started about the development of the rents in the last 8 years.

when the bottom fell out in '08 there were a ton of homes in my old neighborhood that faced foreclosure and went under. These were modest, single story rambler style houses with an average price of $200-250k. A company then came in and bought up all the foreclosures and either did a rehab or tore down and built new 2 story McMansion style homes and then jacked the price upwards of $350-400k. I get it, companies are taking advantage of the housing market but I would almost bet that another bubble is going to burst and all those now expensive homes will be worthless. Rents have been steadily creeping up as well.

@Cole I wanted to buy in 2000, but got wiped out by the aftermath of the Dot.com crash, and then 9/11. The IT industry pretty much shut down in the UK for a couple of years. A friend told me he knew it was bad when the woman he was dealing with for social security had been a DBA for a City bank up until recently. :o
I spent two years working casually for a computer games company in Brighton, then a further 12 to 18 months working on a port of Tempest for mobile phones. Didn't get paid a penny for that, which is a subject for another rant.
It was 2005 or 2006 by the time I was in regular, paid work, and had sufficient salary history to back me up, house prices had doubled, and it was actually cheaper to buy than rent. I expected sanity to return, but both the UK and Australia avoided crashing during the financial crisis, and it's got worse since then.
And rents are really high in London and Melbourne too.
@gaseousclay apparently the house was a target for a developer who flattened a similar property, then tried to sell the empty block on for twice as much. (The listing was pulled a few days later.)
I'm not opposed to development, but there has been a tendency to demolish older houses and either replace them with a McMansion, or an apartment block, which generally don't match the street's scale. Much like the fate of your Rambler houses.

Just got an rejection e-mail for a job I had two interviews for. I realy wanted that job because it was in a more international enviroment then my current one and it would have paid way better. So on one hand I'm a bit sad rigth now.
Now for the rant part:
This company and the associated headhunter mailed, texted and called me throughout my complete vacation. I decribed my field of work in detail to the team leader 5 weeks ago, when they made a phone appointment one day before we left for our family vaccation.
Now they say, they rather hire someone who has more experience in their special field of business even though it was christal clear who I am and where my experiences are, weeks before they wanted to meet for a first job interview. I mean fuck it, I spend the equvalent of a new UHF for a suit I'm most like not gonna wear ever again, just because someone didn't notice I don't have the skillset they are looking for in the first place. WTF!
-
that sucks big time… never get, why it is needed to waste so much time for in the end, nothing...
If I am looking for someone with certain skills, experience, I search for the one. If they are hard to track down and I can deal with a alternative solution I clearly say so and play straight from the start... no idea why there is the need to make things so complicated...

it's always been a dream of mine to go to new york.
then it started last week when a very close friend and co worker mentioned instead of going to europe from england, she's now going to new york. and since then everything around me has been subtly about new york one way or another. and to make it worse, with more people telling me they're going there as well!!

2018 Iron Heart party in New York
Boss idea. Not least because I could sell my wife on it!

Same here.
Besides, it's been six years or so since the last IH party in NYC. About time to do it again.

I will not let my child play with my phone until they fully understand what they are doing for this exact reason. I've read horror stories of kids spending thousands of dollars in one billing cycle on games like candy crush without the parents knowing until the bill comes.

Dammit, I have a UK plug converter.

And there is not a chance in hell I'll find it before Thursday…
