I feel like the most Japanese part of that was the fact that the company apologized, even though no one complained.

I hope so.
They pay better and offer better perspectives on the long run, financially and careerwise. Plus I get to learn a lot of new stuff that will raise my marketvalue for the field I work in a good deal for the future.
All things my current employer could not offer.
The only downside is, that I'll have to drive 2h per day by bus and train now instead 30 min with the car. But the short distance was the only objective plus point of my current job (aside of a good Boss and nice colleagues).
