Haven't tried the Hakushu yet, was going to get a bottle of Yoichi 15 but decided on a Balvenie 15 Single Barrel instead.
Have you tried the Hibiki 17? I heard that one is absolutely delicious. If the 12 is already that good (my favorite blended)…
-
I haven't tried the 17, I don't think much of that hits the American market. It was hard enough to get the 12, I haven't been able to replace it yet. Agreed it's the best blended Scotch style whiskey I've tried.
Hakushu is peated. Highly recommended.

Thanks. I seriously recommend the Nikka Coffey [single] Grain whisky, it's absolutely amazing.

Tonight's cold remedy.

Hibiki 12 is definitely not peated.

alright good to know
definitely still got that mediciney taste a little bit. whats that flavor?

Well, you may be tasting peat, but it would have to be quite faint. I don't recall picking any up (I probably assumed it was char if I did) but you may have a more sensitive palate than I do. I think they used some Hukushu malt in the blend, which would probably be the only peat in the whole shebang, but it's not a very strongly peated spirit. So either you're very sensitive to peat or you're picking up on some combination of barrel char, peat, and maybe the unusual practice of aging the spirit in plum wine barrels–my guess is the confluence of all three. If we were in the same city I'd make you an offer on the bottle!
I have long wondered if there are peat bogs in Japan or if they import from Scotland.

I jujst got the Yoichi 10 for my birthday. Haven't tried it yet, but look forwardto it. I heard somebody Claim it to be peaty, will Report back when I know.
My only japanese whiskies were the Yamazaki 12 and Nikka Straight from the Barrel, both not peated.

The Hakushu is lightly and lovely peated. Generally given the Japanese highball consumption of whisky I'm guessing there are few peated malts in use.
