great idea,
but would use a thinner ruler (could be a virtual one). -
I have not been able to find a thinner white on black set square. I want a heavy set square so that it holds the fabric flat and also a set square gives me right angles to ensure my perspective is correct when I edit it (which thus, I think, means a virtual one does not help with that).
I'm open to a better way of doing this, but it needs to be easy to do with minimum post shot processing else it becomes a chore… -
For us pathetic Americans, a scale in inches would be nice. And I don't know how large your sample swatches are, but it might be helpful to see a bit more of the fabric in the shot.

If the pictures are all sized the same you could just embed a reusable component like this http://jsfiddle.net/thirdender/kwcug/
Or this may be better http://ruler.hilliuse.com

@mclaincausey Whoa, I just want to take a pic, that scares the crap out of me…..

Let @shoque worry about that, again, it's a reusable component. It makes your job easier.

Found your answer. These guys are done with their ruler…

So the process would be something like:
I take photo
I edit to a known size
We drop the code around it or something like that and the rulers appear in viewed image?I think so. The second one is stylesheet based, so you would be able to invoke it on any image. I am not an expert, but I believe it is straightforward, compatible across platforms, and handles units conversion.
