"She's riding a little rough, so I'm gonna get under the hood and make her purr."
Ick. No.

^ In fairness, the people who talk like that without a hint of irony are usually a little unbalanced or lacking in social skills.

^ Speaking for myself, of course. Unbalanced? That's a nice way to say it. Lacking in social skills? Cram it. Soccer? I like the 30 second shorts that show the goals. Men wearing bright yellow shirts that read BIMBO? It's a mystery.

my language usage rant-
I hate the phrase "pull the trigger" for anything that doesn't involve an actual trigger. It kills me too. So, so bad.
There's a load of language on this site I don't get, but is repeated endlessly. 'Nice cop' and 'on point' to name a couple more. I also don't get the Americanisms - when did Autumn on an English forum become 'fall'?
People also seem to be desperate to tell someone something is a 'great fit' too, even when a picture is out of focus, dark or they could probably do with swapping for a different size.Early night for me, I think.
-
So it would have been allowed to say "hey, let's pull the trigger and hang out in San Antonio next weekend"?
Since I know that you would, in fact, be armed, yes.
And while I'm whinging about language, why do so many people not understand the difference between plural and possessive? It's easy- add s for plural, apostrophe s for possessive.

'I could care less'
Face meets palm.
-
Given the general American relationship with triggers, I'd say it implies the exact opposite…
-
I understand your point, but I don't think anyone says "I finally pulled the trigger" on a purchase, for example, to imply that they are recklessly and thoughtlessly making a decision. I think the phrase has been around long enough so that the original intention has not been supplanted by some other meaning related to the obvious gun control issues in the country.

Sounds like someone trying way too hard to sound butch to me.
