I know it’s been discussed but I’m still a bit confused. I know these are unwashed and there’s the potential for shrinkage but it seems no one has discussed when that occurs? If I were to wear these new for several months and get them nice and stretched out and then soak/wash them would they shrink down to close to their new measurements? Or would they shrink past the point of where they were when I got them? I normally buy a 34” waist hoping to stretch them to around 35” so if I did just that and then washed them would I wind up with a pair that fits similarly to when they were new? Or would I lose an additional inch and wind up with a pair that measures 33” in the waist?

Buy a waist that 35 inches wash it go to 34 inches it will stretch back out to 35 inches..
I wear mine don’t wash for at least six months.. but. some wash first it up to you..

I normally just wear the hell out of my jeans until they need a wash but I kept seeing people talking about how these shrink a ton when washed. Is it recommended to wash/shrink these before I wear them? Or can I just do what I normally do and wear them for months with no washes? Will they shrink back to new measurements or shrunken measurements?

If it were me I would get my normal waist size and then soak them in warm water before wearing. Might as well take care of the shrinkage in length right away so you can wash them down the road and not worry about your fades shifting. The waist will stretch back.

How much would you say they shrink in the waist? And inseam?
-
@Tatzapper how much they shrink will depend of how much agitation and heat they are subjected to on their wash/soak. But approximately an inch in the waist and an inch on the inseam can be expected. The thigh and knee will tighten around one third of an inch.
If you wear without soaking they will stretch out some and this will mitigate some of the shrinkage, but they will probably shrink past initial measurements still. Some people do this. I have done it myself with XHS and it was fine. I did it with my pair of these and while the waist and inseam were fine, the thigh ended up too tight.
Another potential issue with wearing first and soaking later, is that you will set creases, the denim will start to fade, then post wash the creases will have to form again in a new place and your fades will half moved half an inch.
Getting the sizing right first time, (with the help of the website, forum, and guys at IHUK), and then washing/soaking to get shrinkage out, is the best, most sensible way.

I’ve noticed these are back in stock. Does anyone have any information on the shrinkage? The website states one inch in the waist and inside leg. I’m unsure whether this is a cold wash or whether a gentle wool wash at 30C would cause more than an inch of shrinkage in the inside leg. I generally don’t cuff jeans and a tag size 31 fits me fine in the indigo version of these jeans. I’m a 29 inside leg so I’m thinking a 30 or 31 inch inside leg. I’m really trying to avoid a hot wash though as it tends to destroy the leather patch.
Hi! One of our other members ran a shrink test, the results can be found here:

We also ran one in house, results here:

Thanks for digging those links up @Palmer. Very useful.
@Tatzapper how does the thigh and knee on these work for you? If they look like they will be doable when they have shrunk 0.2-0.3” on a pair with a 34.5” waist then I’d say go for those.

From the product page:
But it is not an exact science, which is why we use the word approximately in that bullet.
Apart from what Neph says about the amount of shrinkage being a function of how much agitation is used in the soak/wash, there is variability in the shrinkage of the denim from batch to batch even with in the same roll of fabric. This denim is a woven with a very loose weave on an ancient loom, the looseness of the weave and the tendency of the loom to be inconsistent create variability in tension, thus shrinkage.

@neph93 @Palmer @Giles thanks for all the replies guys. I’ve been trying to do my research and get the fit exactly how I’d like them but all it did was make me second guess myself even more lol it’s looking like the tag size 32 in these are going to be my closest bet. At 34.7 they should shrink to 33.7 and then back out to the 34.7ish? I feel pretty confident in these numbers, although they may be extremely snug post soak/wash.
-
From reading your posts it sounds like the tag size 32 is your best bet. After some wear the waist will stretch back out to the unwashed measurements or maybe even farther. I think it's a good idea to start with the waist being nice and snug to account for the stretch.
I know this can be a bit nerve wracking at first. We've all been there. Don't let it drive you too crazy!

This is entirely normal!
Please, please confirm that the thigh will be ok before you proceed though. If you have thighs on the larger side these can be an impossible challenge.

@Palmer this is exactly what my initial train of thought was but I dug TOO deep! I just got a pair of 777S-21 and really like them but I misjudged and they’re a bit looser than I typically wear so I definitely want to get these right
@neph93 i think I should be just fine when it comes to the thigh. The post-wash thigh measurement should be damn near identical to the pair I’ve been wearing for about a year and a half now. Thanks for looking out though, I definitely appreciate it

Thanks for the reply. I finally ordered them and am really looking forward to receiving them. I decided to go with the tag size 31 which is approximately a one inch bigger waist than my usual size. I always wear a belt with jeans so a larger waist should be fine. I take a tag 31 in the indigo version but the thighs are slightly tight so the extra room should come in handy. Went for a couple of inches extra length on the inside leg so I’ll cuff them. Re the washing I’ll probably do a cold hand wash with a mild denim detergent.
Update: received them today. A really nice fit, I’m glad I opted for the same tag size as the indigo 555-01 version.
