Has anyone ever put hot pepper sauce in their birdseed to deter squirrels before? I don't mind feeding the squirrels too, but they are bullies and chase the birds away. They are really greedy and a pain in the ass. I feel kind of bad harming them and I definitely don't want to hurt the birds. They have a tough enough life as it is, out in the cold.
Hot pepper does not permanently harm the squirrels, but I’ve found it only temporarily deters them so I generally shy away from using it. If they’re desperate enough, they’ll eat it anyway and put up with the sting. Fun fact: bird food manufacturers have to double the amount of hot pepper in the bird seed every couple years because squirrels quickly evolve to be able to resist the spice.
The best solution I’ve found is to use the ‘squirrel defender’ feeder. The one downside is that the no-mess food doesn’t cycle through it well. You could probably also use a ‘dinner bell’ feeder but they might figure that out eventually.

I just buy spicy bird/woodpecker food. Squirrels leave it alone. Amazon

apologies if this is the wrong thread to ask.Worth checking out The Real McCoys and also a British brand called Universal Works (who historically have had a lot of different options when it comes to vests). Orslow and Engineered Garments also have a broad selection.
