IH-526PJ - 21oz Selvedge Denim Modified Type III Jacket - Indigo
-
Great family photo, Will, and the jacket suits you (and fits you) perfectly.
I was exactly the same in that I sold my IH-526J for the IH-526PJ for the hand warmers. However, I sold the PJ recently as I simply had too many jackets and I wasn’t wearing it very often. I’m tempted to get one of the darker/overdyed variations.
Out of interest, what size do you wear?

In most IH things, I'm an XXL. In this one, according to the measurements, I was in the middle between the XXL and XXXL, but I went with the XXL and I am glad I did. Those packets are nice. It's funny how something so little can be a big issue.
Thanks for the kind words about my family.

Hi! Contemplating getting one of these… What’s the highest temperature that you would wear out without being to warm? Thanks!
Also, anyone have an XS or S, if you have fit pics and your measuring stats excellent!

Ordered this beast, the last XS IHUK had, and it should be here on wed… Looking forward to my first IH anything (and to reassure myself that the $435 are worth it as I started looking at Levi’s for $50 (US Black Friday and holiday sales can be spectacular) a week ago and somehow ended with a much pricier jacket hahha.
Why I pulled the trigger? I wanted a durable, for life denim jacket, and not a fashion trend. I truly believe that function comes before form.
Of course I looked at Levi’s first as I’ve had a few in the past.. Ordered an XS and a S in rigid (raw?). They’re great looking jackets as I don’t think Levi’s has lost their touch in fitting, but one is tiny and the other is huge (I think the S must be a mis-labeled M, to IH’s good fortune perhaps, as tried on a few other S in different washes at the store today and fit great!). One is made in China and the other in Egypt (and who knows where the denim comes from, or weight, etc) and they’re both a bit different, mainly in the label and hand warmer pockets... This made me realize that Levi’s is almost a bunch of different companies using the same brand, therefore I started researching and decided on 2 jackets to have the best of both worlds; a good’ol American made, with American denim and hardware Brave Star Cone Mills 15oz (pre-ordered, should be here end of dec), and although at first I thought that was it, their lack of good CS kept me looking at forums and reviews and IH kept popping up like an ex-girlfriend!
I read about the company’s commitment to quality, purpose of product, and excellent CS and couldn’t help to think that this is what Levi’s must’ve been when they started over a century ago as the forefathers as we know them of the denim jacket, and what every company should be!
Conclusion: After thinking I would spend $50-100 on a jacket, I’m now over $500 deep but with what I think will be great products. IH I think will be a classic and desirable vintage in the future because of their standards and that’s the type of product and company I like to back up.. Buy once for life!
DISCLAIMER: I’ve had a few glasses of wine and this may or may not have influenced my looong post [emoji42][emoji38]

You’re in for a treat @zeuloa. There’s 0% you will regret having this instead of Levi’s. Unless you regret the thousands of subsequent dollars you’ll spend filling your wardrobe with Iron Heart, hereafter.

Good point [emoji848]… I’m sure some years down the road when it’s like a second skin as I don’t plan to baby it the price will be well forgotten!

@zeuloa you will NOT be disappointed. Unless you don't like heavy jackets.
I bought my first pair of jeans from IH back in 2011, I believe. I remember being so anxious about spending that much on jeans but I just could not for the life of me find a good fitting pair anywhere else. Here I am almost 10 years later and I'm hooked. Now and then I try another brand, sometimes with some success, but I always come back to IH. I can trust that the gear is always made with the highest attention to detail. And the IHUK crew is equally outstanding. Nowhere else have I found customer service on par with the IHUK shop. And how about the fact that they host these fantastic forums?!
Anyhow, you don't have to worry about whether that jacket was worth it. You do have to worry about how much you're going to want to spend on other gear once you put that jacket on for the first time

Thanks! I’m afraid I’ve gotten sucked into it!

So the eagle has landed… Love this jacket! Heavy but soft enough and it seems very breathable as some of you commented.
Would appreciate your thoughts on fit. It’s an XS, and it fits snug although I can button all the buttons (didn’t do the others for the pic as fingers were hurting... These are tough to close!). I am in the process of loosing weight and have about 10-15lbs to go.
Not sure if I should exchange for a S, and perhaps even a 526J-142 14oz... your thoughts?
Thanks!!!

That fit is golden, especially if you are going to lose more weight. It even looks like you could fit a long sleeve shirt underneath if you wanted.
I think the 21 oz. denim is the best introduction to Iron Heart. Even after I’ve tried a bunch of different ones that have been put out, it remains uniquely soft, and a major favorite.
I’ve never tried the 14oz. So I don’t have any comparison advice to offer.
I think you should stick with this one, in this size. Doesn’t get much better on fit.

Thanks @sabergirl!
I agree with @sabergirl, especially as you live in a warm climate and won’t be layering. Good stuff.

Very nice. Oh to wear shorts in December. Outside a gym.

Thanks! The benefits of living in Florida I guess, but the flip side is we only get to wear nice jackets 5 days a year haha

Quick question for you that have had this jacket for a bit.
Have you experienced stretch or shrinkage after washing, and if so about how much? Does it stretch on length from using the hand warmer pockets?
Thanks!
-
Mine stayed the same size after a wash. It didn’t stretch at any point either.

The 21oz denim will not shrink. All denim will stretch as it is a twill weave which leaves room for the threads to realign when put under pressure. A 1x1 straight weave will not stretch much at all as the threads are all locked into one another.
The key word in the above is pressure. On a denim jacket that will not occur many places with wear. Mainly across the back at the shoulders and armpits. All of this is mitigated on a type III by the seams and constructional stitching. So what happens is the jacket "relaxes" a bit, rather than stretches. The only thing using the pockets will stretch is the opening of the pocket.

Thanks for the great answers guys!
