You may know that in Germany we celebrate Christmas Eve, much more than the actual Christmas day. The eve is when you come together, give your presents, have enormous amounts of food, drinks, whatever.
We had a good day here today, which isn't always guaranteed in a family with separated parents. My children, my partner and all of my three siblings plus partners (and one dog) were here.
I made goose breast with red cabbage, and we had some rissoles, potato and carrot salads with it, plus nice wines (white and red).
At 11 pm when everybody left, me and my partner went down to Kiel's main church, St. Nikolai, which is a 10 min walk from my flat. The oldest parts of St. Nikolai date from the 13th century but it was heavily destroyed in WWII and still bears scars from that times.
In front of the church stands a sculpture called Geistkämpfer (The Fighter of the Spirit) by Ernst Barlach, which the Nazis didn't like but could be saved from being destroyed.
The Christmas Mass was beautiful, with music from the organ and a choir, mainly Bach and Mendelson.
Afterwards we walked home through an empty and silent inner city.
And passed the town hall square with the opera house.
“Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace among those with whom he is pleased!”
Hope you'll all have wonderful Christmas days with beloved people. Merry Christmas to all of you, all over the world.
