Catch of the day [Fishing]

Fishing for snook and got this guy. Missing a claw and a back fin. Been through a battle. Lived to fight another day.

Check out this handmade lure. She’s a biggun!

Went fishing in mountain streams and ponds in Thurmont, Maryland. I didn't catch any but Amanda my wife and Uncle Bill each caught a rainbow. My job was to clean and prep them for dinner. Good deal.
Saw three golden (marker) trout up there this morning too. Two visible next to one another in a stream and a guy next to us at a pond reeled one in to show us.
-
@Mizmazzle yeah Golden trout are used as markers to show where the rainbows are. They look like this:
-
WV introduced them in 1963: https://www.wvencyclopedia.org/articles/2273#:~:text=The West Virginia Centennial Golden,then bred for the characteristic.
I saw a few growing up in nearby streams.
-
@Mizmazzle oh no they are real fish in the water. They are bred out in the Midwest my Unc said and stocked into streams from the hatcheries in MD. They are added to help folks identify where the regular rainbow trout are in the streams. So if you see a golden one from above, there will likely be rainbow trout nearby that pool or wherever. Here are some quick Google Images:

Interesting! I know they originated in the Sierras of Northern, California. Then Finis Mitchell brought a brood to the Wind River Range of Wyoming and stocked the many high alpine fisheries that exist today....

@Mizmazzle fascinating stuff really. So glad we went out there today.

My homie Matt and I just got back from our annual trip to Wyoming to fish for Golden trout. We backpacked in and hiked 30 miles from start to finish. We were in the backcountry for five nights and didn’t see another human soul for days!! Absolutely magical. It was the type of experience that carries me through the challenging parts of work life during the school year. Check it out!!
Last year I caught the biggest fish. This year that honor went to Matt.

@Mizmazzle fantastic!!

That‘s so awesome @Mizmazzle Did you have to take precautions against bears? Did you eat the trouts?
-
@Mizmazzle that looks stunning! Also good to be reminded of the proper name for the golden trout. Somehow your quest for this fish came up in conversation a while back and the best I could do was fish that live at the top of mountains / sky trout
-
@Mizmazzle Amazing scenery and beautiful trouts!
I was fishing perch and northern pike earlier this week. Good times. Maybe trying grayling tomorrow.

@Mizmazzle beautiful!
