IHJ-49 - Split Steer Modified Type III Jacket - Black or Brown
-
I was able to try on an XL but not the XXL. What has me a little confused is the 17oz OD type 3 I have has narrower shoulders by .75” and chest by 2” but feels roomier than the XL IHJ-49 even though it measures larger. Its really only feels snug if my arms are in the “hugging” position. Maybe this is normal for leather jackets? I haven’t owned or worn a leather jacket before. It felt good otherwise just a little snug in the driving or hugging position. Only snug in the back of the shoulders area.
-
@juicydeeluxe that's funny I thought my leather type 3 was much much much roomier than my od 14 both in xl, especially in the chest and shoulders, which is weird because it has a lining so you'd think it'd be smaller.
-
@Giles I’ve never worn a leather jacket before. I wasn’t sure if some snugness in the upper back/shoulder might be expected if extending out the arms to a 90 degree angle or there about or if this was an indication of an ill fitting jacket. I should’ve been more clear. It felt like a well fitting jacket otherwise.

So I went back and was able to try on both the 44 and 42. I ended up leaving with the 42. The 42 fits great and even allows me to add a couple of layers if needed. The 44 was too roomy. Idk why I thought it was too tight when I last tried it on.
-
@juicydeeluxe looks like a good fit to me! Did you end up buying it?
-
@goosehd Yes, this one was 25% off because there was some black dye transferred to it from the black one hanging next to it. Got the black too lol
-
For anyone with this jacket and the N1, how does the sizing compare? I noticed Adam C and Graham wear an XL in this, but a L in the N1.
-
@Graham Thank you!
-
@juicydeeluxe What a steal!
-
@juicydeeluxe I have a brown one but was looking at black too, what are your thoughts on the black one since you have both?
-
Killer jacket indeed. Upsized to XXL to layer and had the sleeves shortened 3” to better fit. Comfortable straight away. The jacket has a great drape to it, heavy and buttery soft, even a light shirt or t-shirt works as well.
-
@Transporter good on you, yeah!! Looks great. I had the sleeves shortened on mine too and it was a game changer.
-
@Mizmazzle Thanks, brother. I actually kept the cuffs on after shortening on this one and glad I did. I can still wear my watches with it when unbuttoning the cuffs. On my J-64, I cut the cuffs away on that one but the horsehide is so different than this roughout so works out for both. Damn fine jacket this one--no break-in at all. Pretty awesome steerhide and construction too and the ever-important gun pockets. And of course painful fingers--hurts so good.
-
@Transporter I must have a newer one or something because mine has really nicely finished button holes and the buttons are like butter from brand new.
-
@borosillykid Good on ya, mate. Mine is pretty new as well, bought a month ago. I actually don't mind the nice, tight specs. Much easier after only a few days with this one. My J-64 was one tight virgin for a few weeks.
-
@Transporter I bet that's a sick jacket though wow. I'm trying to decide if I want the black split steer too but I probably don't need it I have 8 IH jackets and my gf kinda said I'm cut off for the time being lol. Plus I have two OD jackets already so blacks kinda covered haha. I wish I had a horse hide to check out as I absolutely love a stiff firm jacket.
-
@borosillykid Hahaha, hey gfs don't count! Tell her if and when you get married, she has a say. A man needs his jackets, jeans, boots, knives, tools, bikes, trucks, gear, toys of all varieties. Once you get married, far more complicated finding more space, for example, for those must-have, custom Viberg marbled black shell cordovan boots and Black Jack elephant boots that arrive in the same week. Ugh! When the wife sees them, I reply "these old things? Got them used from a guy on the boot forum." LOL
Having said that. Giles wasn't just marketing when he says that IH's chrome-tanned horsehide is the best he's found. Smells glorious and takes a serious lickin' as bikers would want and looks great. The J-64 is beast of a jacket armor with a great break-in that molds to the body like the 21 oz jeans. I also have the SB Blattwerk work jacket horsehide that smells like olives and velvety smooth and no break-in from day 1. Two totally different vibes.
