The third place final is a joke. The result is meaningless for fans and it must feel like an empty exercise for players who have just lost the possibility of playing in a the actual final.

The national leagues have made finishing second (and third and fourth) a virtue through prize money and participation in the UCL and the like, but in cup competitions, and especially the World Cup, first is everything, second is nothing. Third and fourth place shouldn’t even be an issue.

Like everything else in football the third place play-off is all about the money: the winner gets USD 24 mio., the loser USD 22 mio. BTW the winner of the final receives USD 38 mio., the runner-up USD 28 mio.
