Raw Denim - What is it?
-
In it’s purest definition, raw – also referred to as ‘dry’ or ‘loom-state’ denim (or chambray for that matter), are terms used to describe a fabric that has had no post loom processing performed on it. These post weave process include, sanforization, anti-skewing, washing, soaking, sizing etc. etc.etc.
The definition of raw has been diluted over the years, and is now often used to describe any denim that is dark blue. So it is possible that a denim which has been sanforized, but not washed is referred to as raw, it is even possible that a denim that has been washed, but is still dark blue, be referred to as raw.
Whenever Iron Heart refers to raw, we refer to a denim that has undergone zero post loom processing. As such, any Iron Heart garment made out of raw denim or chambray will shrink when soaked or washed.

@Giles – I follow the IH definition, which refers to denim right after it's been woven, with no additional processes done beyond cutting and sewing, of course. You're correct; the definition has evolved over time. It seems there might be a difference in how the West and Japan interpret raw denim, as they may not see eye to eye on its exact meaning. Even, I saw a video from #Naked&Famous denim, they were defining Raw-denim subjectively and
perspectively. -
@Giles Haha .. if u r referring to Brandon [ willy wonka of " fashion " world ], no it was not.him.. he knows what he is doing, imo ..
the guys who work for him .. the crew.. i saw them define raw selvedge. Everyone was seeing and defining it differently..
Do ya anything against Brandon?
Do i sense animosity here?
Just asking on a lighter note,@Giles -
The one-wash and no-wash options from brands like Samurai and ONI are a bit perplexing.
Maybe it's a marketing term .. I like those days when it was shrink-to-fit [STF] -

Just asking on a lighter note,@GilesIt was a generalisation and I was not pointing my finger at anybody/any brand in particular.
Brandon does what he does and he does it incredibly well. Is he in the same space as us? 100% no.
If we bump into each other on our travels we'll pass the time of day and have a few beers. I do not do that with people I dislike.
I think you may be reading more into what I said, than I meant.....

Yeah .. u said generally.. I got nosy
IH and N&F appeal for different demographic. Never Met him nor you. Just know both of you through the shared passion. U both get to do what I get to see.
I got carried way and let on more. It was nothing with ill-intent. -
Infact, it was @Kasi who got me introduced to you and this forum ..
-
N&F jeans from that day owe a pair never again.
There is no match for IH jeans out there
Your hunt is over. -

-
They was hem by golf bag maker.
Come on get a grip.
You don’t know that -
James bond wore a N&F pair in one of the movies .. no time to die (2021) ..
Stretch selvedge [most probably] or dirty fade selvedge.
They deserve some credit.
Mo, u hate everything which is not IH, FC, TFH and Buco and GAH ..
-
Has zero effect on me. Who worn it.
See IH Is bigger than N&F don’t need no celebrity to wear it real people wear it -
I m.not comparing IH and N&F .. IH IS TOP-notch, best of the best ..
The thing i love about them is that they experiment with fabric and dyeing a lot.
They wanna be creative, innovative, and do what no one has done it. I like such traits about them. They put a lot of effort in R&D, keeping traditional methods alive with modern touch. You don't have to like them.
WHEN Japanese take on a trade, they master it. no one beats them to craftsmanship and passion for producing jeans. Thanks to them, we get to wear selvedge jeans still in 2025 and many more years to come.
ALL HAVE CONTRIBUTED A LOT IN THIS INDUSTRY AND keeping sub-culture of selvedge denim alive.
