@Luijim78 Thank You! Its exactly what I was initially thinking, but on product page (https://www.carminashoemaker.com/cap-toe-boots-brown-chromexcel-80179) they have the section stating:
''Chromexcel is a "pull-up" horsehide leather from the Horween Leather Company. This leather has a very special greased finish which is created by the combination of both chrome and vegetable tanning. This leather is very low maintenance and ages beautifully to create a distressed look which is usually paired with casual boots and derby shoes.''So I guess these are indeed horsehide part of the overall Chromexcel production?
-
@Karol Chromexcel is indeed the tanning process/recipe. The vast majority is from bovine leather (typically steer), but you also find Chromexcel from horse (Aero uses a lot of this in their jackets for instance), bison etc.
There are also many different versions of Chromexcel, like the Chromexcel Cavalier, Wooly Chromexcel, M's Chromexcel, Beufort Chromexcel etc. Typically these are tweaks to the recipe for a desired use case. Adjustments in the amounts of oils/fats for instance, to allow for different (brighter) colours, or to make it more suitable for gluing, different finishes and on and on and on.
Put in a large enough order with Horween and they can do exactly what you want.
-
@Karol the process is also used in some horse leathers (like in the new Mr Lou for example) and I also completely agree with the description, unlike the vegetable tanned horse leather (with some exceptions... for example Shinki...) the Horsehide leather belted with Cromo immediately appears softer and plumper, the pull-up effect is wonderful, it seems that the natural color of the skin appears with the simple touch. Only it is certainly less shiny and shiny than the vegetable tit.

@Autorotate badass. This is the pic I’ve been looking for. DPs with an uncuffed pant leg. Looking for nice!!
How long have you had these? -
Yo!! @Mizmazzle maybe a year. Bought 2 pairs of the natty CXL on the second hand market. 8.5 and 9. These are the 9’s. Actually a shade too big, but can be mitigated with thick socks and or a leather insert.
Both pairs had perfect patina when I received them, and the leather was pristine. Just a testament to the material and build quality. And man you can go MILES in these. Despite being pretty heavy, they are easily the most comfortable laced boot I own. -
@Autorotate hell yeah. These are on my Xmas wish list. If Santa doesn’t bring them then I’ll be buying myself a gift before the start of the new year haha.
-
@Mizmazzle Grant Stone Diesel boot in Horween Garnet Shell Cordovan. Sorry about that. I really enjoy wearing these
-
More clinch engineers, these ones are black overdyed latigo, cn last, lowered heel, partially structured toe. I really like that these ones haven’t given up any of the overdye after about 3 years of regular wear.. It seems to me a lot of tea core leathers fade much faster than these have done.
-
@Autorotate , thanks for the compliment, yes , I've always like the overall profile of the IR but the sole just seems to be kinda lacking something. And I've always like a complete stack leather mid and heel ,even my whites boots I've also got brass of tokyo to remove and resole it
-
@VoodooRay they are wonderful … yes it probably depends on the Latin tanning with double process. I wanted to get a pair of Buco with the same leather. Congratulations indeed
-
@Luijim78 Thanks! I feel like there's a dull peachy hue sitting underneath the black when the sunlight shines on them. I'm hoping that they stay relatively black and that when they do start to give up some of the overdye the tea core effect will be a more subtle than it is on other overdyed boots that I have.
-
@VoodooRay I think it will be exactly like this, my compliments are really very nice (I hope one of my next purchases)

Alden Tobacco Reverse Chamois
Still early days, only 12-13 days of wear but I can’t recall more comfortable boots than those. -
@Cskarev those look great, love the crocking starting to show up. I’m a huge fan of that kind of character suede/roughout gets. Will just keep getting better and better.
-
@popvulture I am really excited to see further progress on the crocking you mentioned…Those boots are extremely beautiful now and I also believe they will look even better in the future.
