Fair enough. I sort of expected it to bug me, but it really doesn't. Probably depends a lot on cut of the pants and placement of the rivet.
-
Worse was the rivet on the coin pocket though…
Anyhow: these look nice enough but can someone tell me why I'd wanna take these over the 666-Ds?..
B/c Roy makes some damn fine clothes, some people can't fit into 666 anythings, and there's no 634 cut duck (hint hint maybe?).

different horses for different courses but.. handmade by one person, in un sanforized, cone mills selvage duck is appealing.. not to mention the slightly crazy ROY details

I went with the Roy over the 666d cause the 38 666d's leg opening is so big for my taste and the 36" waist is way to small for me. Plus it's nice to have some options in the closet that aren't super heavy. The only thing that I don't like about Roy's products is his lack of back pocket accurates. With his crazy attention to details you figure he'd be all over that? But yeah they look good and unsanforized selvage duck sounds delightful to me
And trust me I've been thinking about te 666d's a lot and just couldn't figure out a way to make me happy with them other then having them tapered

I just ordered some unsanforized Roy ducks and I'm excited about them…..BUT..... It was a big contest between them and devil ducks. Since I already have 801s and want something for summer these are what I picked. I also figured that the DD will be made longer/in bigger runs. I hope I'm right as I'm already wondering if I made the right decision!!!!!

I have now had my Roy raw ducks for a couple of days now and they are pretty great. I wanted to do a little comparison between them and my 801s that I've owned for about a year or so now. When comparing these pants, the first detail that is incredibly obvious is how different the fabrics feel and behave. The 11 ounce Cone duck comes unsanforized and is light and crispy. Mine are still very new, so they are still settling but I can see how these will evolve as they are becoming softer by the hour. The IH 17 ounce duck is slightly stiff, heavy and substantial. There is a reason why I wear these to do all of my yard work. After owning them for a year despite some damage from abrasion they still look very new.

(thickness comparison)
Construction wise, I don't know how to compare them as both are at the top of their game. Gratuitous triple stitching, riveted reinforcements, and the 801s have a double knee which has grown on me considerably. The ONLY things I miss about my pair of loggers is a leather patch and back pocket rivets. The Roy pair has hidden rivets and a cool flasher to remind you of it too.
(Triple stitching everywhere and Roy's unique vintage clamshell stitching on the fly)

(Belt loop comparison)- IH has a much more substantial loop, but the Roy loops are again made on vintage machines and are kinda neat.
(Front pocket comparison)
To be honest, I love both pairs of pants and I don't know if I can pick a favorite. I'll probably keep the IH for yard work/heavy chores and I'll wear the Roys a bit more day to day. I wore my Roy ducks to church and around town today and they dress up well. I think that the IH would also if not for the double knee. Either way you go, both are great and I'm happy to have them in my collection

Anesthetist, excellent review. Thank you. The Roy's are my first pair of ducks and I was curious how they compared to IH. I was planning on doing a similar review after an 816 purchase. You beat me to it. I haven't been able to wear the Roy's as much as I would like – due to weather -- but they have gotten considerably more comfortable after 5-10 wears. Enjoy them in good health, and thanks again for the review.

Went to SESF on friday and got a chance to wear and examine the Roy Ducks. Amazing fabric. Like Anesthetist said, the fabric is crisp and not so rough. I assume its because of it being unsanforized.
What really impressed me was the detailing. So much good details. From the zipper fly stitching to the chainstitched signature on the pocket bags.

Think I need to double cuff?
