Indeed, lined is warmer and they hold shape a bit longer.
I have both, I love the unlined because it had minimal break-in and is very comfortable and soft.
But I also love the lined shaft because it adds a bit of heft and looks/feels great.I would say the biggest difference is temperature of the boots, you can't go wrong either way.
I do believe the Johannes will always be lined because of the construction (it needs a bit of stiffer/thicker walls because of the lack of heel cup).

Thanks for the input on the topic! I’m going to stick with my original thinking: no lining. I want a boot I can wear year-round, so extra warmth is not something I need. I think the Wesco Redwood leather is thick enough (7oz. oil-tanned) to suit my purposes. Plus, I’m going for Redwood Roughout, so the smooth side will be inside the boot anyway, which should allow for a comfortable wear.

Redwood RO! Sounds rad

Question for those that have custom built Wescos: What are the advantages and disadvantages to adding a lining inside the boot?
I have a lined boss boot. I liked it because it holds its shape better and just feels better overall. It was hot wearing them during the summer though.

…@Jett129 as I patiently wait for my custom Wesco's to be built I was banging through the XHS-777-IND thread because I just purchased a pair and low and behold I ran into your post from way back on your 777's and saw the picture that got me rolling on the boots!!
...my patience is growing thin!! I want my boots!!

The custom Johannes I ordered in March arrived at my house today. They turned out even better than I was expecting. I ordered the soles from Dr. Sole and sent them to Chris. The speckled cork is my favorite detail.
The fit of these boots is more snug than my other Wescos, presumably because all Johannes boots are lined. I had to remove the insoles until they're a bit more stretched out. I know they'll be fine though because they were built using the measurements and tracings Chris did when I visited Wesco HQ a few years ago.

Thanks dude! Definitely worth the 7 month wait. I need to take a Wesco family photo with all my different pairs.

The dr soles are a great addition. You have some chinos, a cut off sleeve blue sweatshirt and an A2 to match?
-
Beautiful build, @Palmer . did you spec the leather trim too?
-
@Nkwkfld I've got some green fatigues and some blue chambray shirts to complete the boondocker look. No sweatshirts or A2 jackets (yet). Wouldn't mind an Aero, though…
@steelworker Thanks! The leather around the top is actually the lining. I think the color is called tobacco. For the midsole I had them do a waxed edge.
