Welp for the 888s are back from IH for the hem job! I’d say they nailed it!! First day out and the break in is going swimmingly!! Love the feel of this 21oz denim!! The hooks are sinking deeper in as the tentacles of the 888 take hold and the Iron Heart gains another loyal soldier in it’s denim clad army!!!

fortunately - this is as formal as it gets for me
and yeah, this cut definitely works on slimmer build like mine, as well as for stronger physiques -
Morning folks! Hope you're all well.
I have just purchased my first pair of overdid Iron Hearts. I have bought the 888 in tag 36v waist. Now I take pretty much dead on a 36 so asked the guys at IHUK if they had a pair that measured less than the stated measurement of 35.7 as I was concerned that once the stretch had occurred they may be too loose. They kindly found a pair at 35.2" which I can just about do up. My first question is roughly how long with regular wear would it take to stretch these bad boys out an inch or so as they're not currently particularly comfortable and am I being daft by enduring temporary discomfort, should I just get a pair nearer my actual size and enjoy the extra room once the stretch has occurred. And potentially future proof a bit too as my waist only seems to be going one way atm!!Also has anybody attempted a taper adjustment to narrow the hem? The one problem I always have with IH jeans is I find the hems a little wide, even on my 555s. I'm guessing any such adjustment would mean the whole inseam being adjusted in which case you then run into the problem of matching the overdyed thread. I'm not so keen on contrasting thread on black(ish) jeans.
Sorry, long winded post, tia for any advice.

They will stretch an inch or more, quite quickly. One week of daily wear for example. Wearing a belt and not being active will retard the process. In other words hold steady, and in a week or two you should be fine.
People get IH jeans tapered. The usual suspects in the US do it by mail order. There are denim specialists in the UK and Australia too. The inseam will be picked to do the work and replicating OD’d polycotton can be tricky. However the specialists should have a choice of threads and find a match.
All that being said, I’ve seen many a pair of IH ruined by aftermarket tapering. The silhouette of your 888’s have been planned and designed from the waistband down. Fucking with it can create unwanted results.

Thanks Neph for such a swift response!
I feel you re fucking with the taper, it's not something I'd ordinarily consider I'm reluctant to even hem tbh but might need to due to the chunkiness of the 21oz looking a bit odd when double cuffed.I'm in the UK so there's a few people about who could attempt it if the mood takes me.
Think I'll style it out with the waist as you recommend, if I can get in excess of an inch stretch I'll be golden.
Was always a bit Luke warm on denim that isn't black black but with the toned down stitching I think I'm gonna enjoy these!

I will biggy back on what Neph93 said about fecking with tapering services on a pair that already had a nice taper to it. What i love about IH is their reluctance to cater to ridiculous small hems and the end result is more timeless cuts, less trendy and way more mature. I think after a month of continues wear you would love that 8.5 inch hem and never look back

i also agree that tapering them would be a mistake. they fall down with a great silhouette once you break them in and material relaxes. in general my 5 cents on fit - 888OD(w34) is a great cut for 21oz material, super comfortable from a get go, and although it fits great for stronger built, thicker thighs, it also works great on slimmer build like mine (5'.11" and 165lbs with thinner legs), especially in winter, when i like a bit more relaxed fit. i also have IH-777S-19ib in W33 and thats nice and snug fit, would prefer a bit higher back rise, since i move a lot. for lighter material like 14oz, i think i'm going to go with 666 since i expect they wont hang on my hips as much as 777s and the snug fit works well in summer.
I know that @neph93 and others already wrote a fantastic content on this forum about each particular fit, making us newbies confident in ordering online, but felt like my experience was worth sharing for slimmer guys that can also go in 888 territory. -
Thanks @yannis and @prpx .
I get that IH denim tends towards the traditional. in cut, I just find a smaller hem a bit neater with trainers which unfortunately I have to wear a lot for work. I also have to walk backwards quietly a lot and excess hem, believe or not can be a it noisy!
Although I've expanded a bit round the middle I still have pretty slim legs and tbf the 888 cut seems to work for me from a comfort point of view. I love my 555XHS but the front rise is a little too shallow despite being a medium/high rise and they sometimes sit a little uncomfortably. I don't foresee that being an issue with the 888s, as middle age encroaches my jeans are inevitably relaxing in cut a bit although that said I never rocked a skinny jean! PBJ relaxed tapered have worked well for me.
I have a lot of other IH gear and the jeans were the last piece of the puzzle as I was used to a trimmer cut but the 888 may have resolved that particular issue. Now all I need to do is ensure my bank account can handle the inevitable onslaught. -
I am loving these 888's!! I dig the higher rise. The 21oz OD is awesome so far. The cut is spot on for my style and liking. I've been a bit curious about the washing regimen on the OD. I read earlier in this post about the OD benefiting a bit more from a regular wash. I believe it was @neph93 that felt it suited this denim in particular. Just sort of curious if others take a slightly different approach with the OD or just beat it to hell and minimal washing like most any other IH denim??

This is my approach. I will say that they get softer and softer the more you wash, more than other IHs I've owned. A nice perk, but I don't go out of my way to wash them more than any others.
-
With od you don't have to worry about shrinkage at all. The OD process takes all the shrinkage out of the denim. As far as wash frequency? Wash them when dirty and dont worry about it. Great pair of jeans by the way

I’ve washed mine more than most other denim I own. That wasn’t a plan, more of a consequence of the speed at which I find they pick up dirt.
Tbh I never start wearing a pair with plan in place, other than wash when dirty/smelly. Some go a while and get worn hard, others get washed more often. They all fade in the end.
