IHM-29-KHA Alpaca Lined Whipcord N1 Deck Jacket - Khaki
-
I have a true to size medium deck jacket from one of the earliest runs, and I think it fits perfectly for multiple layers. It would too big with just a tee underneath, but I’m not planning to dress that way in the winter, anyway. Many folks size down for a trim fit, but I want my outerwear, as, well, outerwear.

Good questions. A few words about sizing and measuring. Different brands and retailers measure differently. That may be the case vis-a-vis you me 9Lives shirt and your UHF’s. The only way to be sure is to learn one method and stick with it.
As you point out some shirts are cut differently. Wider shoulders and bigger armholes will affect the fit of the shirt over the chest. A good example of this is IH workshirts vs westerns. The work shirts generally have smaller shoulders which means you can be in need of a bigger chest for them to fit properly.
As for the N-1’s I think most people go with their shirt size for layering, but can go down for a snugger, more «tailored» fit. I have an XL N-1 and take XL in most shirts. I can get a henley and UHF or heavy vest under mine. Even a type III. I’m considering another for warmer days. Again, jackets aren’t shirts, and are cut differently so you have to start from scratch there.
So to answer your question, I think an XL would be good for you and the kind of fit you want.
Thanks for the feedback! I always have this thought of wanting a jacket to survive the apocalypse, but in truth, that isn't what I would need this to be used for 99% of the time. BTW, shout out to Norway! My family used to live on the island of Senja, in a tiny fishing village called Vangsvik.
I have the first release of the N1. It’s the same size as my shirts and I have no problems layering , even with thicker things such as the melton wool shirt. The cut is definitely not slim.
I haven’t kept up on how the cut of the N1 has varied over time except for noticing that some of them run short. So keep an eye on the length, especially with you height.
Good call on length. Usually 27"+ works for me. I'm not usually bending over a lot, so I don't usually need too much back coverage.
I’m 5’10” and 170lbs. Average build. High street size medium. However, I wear a large in IH shirts and most jackets.
In the N1 deck jacket, I find the medium is perfect with just a t-shirt but too tight with anything beyond that.
Sadly, the large ended up being too big for me. It was comfy and allowed for layering but was too big and baggy even with a thick wool jumper underneath. Not to mention the sleeves were significantly too long in the size large.
So I personally think this jackets works best if you size down from your IH shirt size. It really depends what you intend to wear it with though.
My use case would mainly be in the teen to 50 degree Fahrenheit range, and I would not be static. So, I can't imagine needing to layer very much underneath.
@Nkwkfld:
Having bought the last indigo small last week, I can second the advice to go one size smaller than shirt, which is what the crew told me, and I am happy I took that advice. I am 174cm and 67kg and got a size small.
Good call. Thanks!
Same in my case. I've ordered M, one size smaller than my IH shirts and jackets (L).
I usually take same size as Sam from IHUK. I'm taller but slimmer than him so I have to be careful about sleeves length but IHUK crew sometimes can find a little bit longer than in measurements chart.I was toying with the idea of sizing down 2 more than my normal shirt size, but only because there are small variations in some of the sizing between the different jacket runs.

Yea, I can understand if someone lives in a place with "real" winter. I'm in California. There are spots where it will get cold, but I won't really need to use the jacket with layering 90%+ of the time. Especially since I run hot. But I definitely want something when I'm in the mountains in January-March.

Is N1 Deck Jacket water resistant/repellent?
Whipcord is a tight weave so it should stand light rain and snow I think? -
I will try

on it.
Tested on Carhartt Duck Detroit Jacket and worked well in the rain. -
I am 5’9”, 165lbs. I wear a medium in US/western sized shirts and a large in most jackets. I need an XL in Iron Heart UHF. I ordered a large N1 and it was too big, especially the sleeves. The medium fits well but could be a tad bigger in the chest. Japanese sizing is different from western sizing…..

Has anybody washed one of these yet? I worry for my washing machine… Also worried that if I hand wash it, it will never dry...

Like A said tons of variables, but I'd lean towards medium. IH outerwear tends to fit larger than shirting. Fit pics of the IH crew and forum regulars helps. I'm 5'11 165lbs and have tons of layering room in my medium–IHM-14v2 (could flirt w/small, but swim in a large).

I'd go M
thanks Giles! May I ask about the measurements quoted on the IH site for a size Medium?
shoulders: 17.2 - this seems quite narrow, but looking at the photos it appears that the arms travel into the shoulder area if you know what I mean - hence the arm length being quoted as 27.3…....does the sleeve length compensate for the narrow shoulders?
thanks in advance

As a general rule, this is true - yes. Shoulders and sleeve combine to give an overall neck to wrist fit, one can compensate for the other but the shoulder seam will only sit where the shoulder measurement suggests it will

thanks great info! I've bought and sold 3 ill fitting deck jackets in the past few years, so I am trying to do due diligence. A green size 38 RMC N1 was just a fraction too small, but it looked great! A Freewheelers N1 tagged as a 40 was smaller than the aforementioned RMC. And a navy BR N1, size L was too baggy all around. I am looking for something that fits just right! I could go for an RMC in a 40, but I fancy trying an IHN1, I love the D shaped pockets, the colour and absence of USN stencils.
