Thanks guys!
Right now I'm trying to justify for myself why I should get the http://killspencer.com/special-ops-backpack/classic-original-wax-special-ops-backpack.html for 340 USD while things like this exist for 78 USD:
http://www.amazon.com/Brooklyn-Industries-Canvas-Conduit-Backpack/dp/B007SY589O/ref=sr_1_1?s=apparel&ie=UTF8&qid=1339586674&sr=1-1I guess the question is: Will the special ops backpack outlast the brookly industries one four times over? Or will the better design, stiffer waxed cotton etc make it feel better in use? ACH! I know nothing of daybags, I only know hiking bags
But thanks again, great with more alternatives!

Haha, good point
And well, my mother usually say that shoes and backpacks, that's where you should put your money. I put my money everywhere else, so I guess I should not skimp on the backpack side.

Nope - it's the Klettersack actually:

Topo bags are very good quality for the price and the fact that they are made in USA.
I have this in black

Someone recommend me a fairly contemporary, light, day pack. Purely for urban use, light shopping, snacks, assorted religious paraphernalia etc…
-
day pack = small to medium backpack
-
Megatron, I'd suggest one of two courses.
If you're looking for a generic day-to-day bag then I'd pop into a local outdoor shop, try on various packs between 15 and 25 litres, and see what you like. I think that they're much of a muchness.
Alternatively, if you want something more special then I'd take a look at what's in the sale at Oki-ni (I particularly liked the White Mountaineering, Silent by Damir Doma and purple Masterpiece bags), Present, End Clothing (the WTAPS backpack isn't in the sale, is lovely, but expensive), and Bill Amberg.
I was in Liberty's of London a week ago, and they had an otter green Filson rucksack and a Jas MB leather daypack (similar to the White Mountaineering design).
The other thing that I'd be considering would be saving up for one of the leather satchels that Margaret Howell (not on the website) or the Merchant Fox (made by Tanner Bates, and it'd be cheaper to go to source ;D), which would likely last a lifetime or two. They're not cheap though.

Thank you so much Graeme, on my way to check it out now. I did have a WTAPS A.L.I.C.E pack years ago, but regrettably I sold it

My go-to daily use rucksack is the North Face Recon. Good value, laptop friendly and lots of pockets. Of course, I've recently discovered Goruck and my GR1 is fantastic although too big for daily use, but perfect for two to three day trips. My GF has the Goruck Echo and it's small but very handy.
This week I got a Tusting briefcase/satchel (Melchbourne in Sundance Floodlight brown) for work related day trips to London etc. and longer trips where I need a suitcase and hand luggage.

Any UK stockists of GoRuck that you know of Michael?
-
Just checked google. According to the Goruck twitter account @GORUCK, they don't have any U.K stockists. They recommend emailing them:
And they'll "take care" of you.
Edit: although, that was in May last year. So they might, but that was practically the first hit.
-
Actually, great as they are, I don't want to spend almost $300 on something I'm not going to use that often.
-
Mega, just go with Herchel Supply or Topo Designs. Good enough quality to last a few years with light use. Cheap as hell.
$35(on sale)-$120.
You can pretty much find them on sale at anytime.
Karmaloop promo codes are always around, even on the site.

I got a good deal on the Gorucks, for some reason the small one was $70 reduced which paid for the postage. I use the GR1 weekly at the moment, so it seemed worth it.
Highly recommend the North Face Recon though. Presuming they still make it, it's an excellent bag for the money. I posted a 'what's in your bag' a while back here: http://www.ironheart.co.uk/forum/index.php?topic=284.msg42528#msg42528
Rubbish picture, but gives you an idea what was in the bag.
