REVIEW IH777s14 AT 260 DAYS of wear
This is my first pair of Iron Heart. I was so happy with them that quickly invested an IHSH-33 IND and a denim jacket followed. My experiences after 260 days of wear.
FIT
It is supposed to be a more fitting pair of denim, but to me, it is a more classic-looking snugger fit. Denim feels heavy even at 14 Oz. to me but also super comfortable. It feels protective, so while being (workwear)fashion, it has a workwear fit and feel.
FINISH
All details ooze attention to detail. The backpockets are lined and the parts feel like being welded together, not stitched. But some parts lack the same quality. So I have to send it in for a repair . The front pocket linings have ripped. I never put my phone in, don’t put my keys in those pockets. The only thing that goes in there is my AirPods case, which is round. I used to have the same problem with A.P.C. but you expect more from Iron heart. Overall still this is a fantastic product.
FABRIC
At 14 Oz. it punches above its weight. To me it feels very heavy. i have no experience with 21 Oz. Worn with a #IHSH33IND you will feel absolutely bulletproof. The denim is sturdy yet very comfortable. The weave and dye are in a league of their own. I like my denim plain, so no slub or whatever. This fabric is spot on.
FADING
At 260+ days it is as I expected and completely different. I see that since 20 days or so the fading seems to accelerate. That is my experience with most of the denims I own. But what is different is that the fabric feels like as tough as when new. Other jeans also showed some wear. See the stage where these jeans are in my “Fading-stage-flow” below
SERVICE
I had to request a free repair. I was approved swiftly and contact with Iron Heart has the same vibe as buying at a local shop (DO buy loca though if you can). You mail/chat to people instead of some customer service proces. That is excellent. Free repairs means you still pay for shipment. 20,- is not something to complain about, but it is not 'free'. I could also spend that same amount or a bit more at my local tailor. So maybe it would be more sustainable and sympathetic to say that if a repair is approved you can spend 20,- to repair it locally. Iron Heart can save on staff. Why I didn't bring it to a local tailor is because I want it to be as original as possible. Like in my car, I only want original parts (quite hard is that is a 'classic' Alfa Romeo)
FASHION
Can a pair of jeans be fashion? To me, especially when raw denim, is more workwear. Probably the most worn piece of clothing ever. Like a white T, it is not fashion, but esential. And these pants are as close to the essence of what a pair of jeans should be.
USE
I am of the philosophy of "same jeans different top" for about 400 days of wear until it goes in my rotation/collection. Not having to think about what pants I wear makes my life a little less complex. Now I 100% work in my own business with my comanion, I can do that 100% of the time. No corporate dress expectations anymore. I wear these pants most of the days. It does not matter if I work behind a computer, help people move or do heavy manual work. Works in every situation, but when the weather is sunny and hot.
STAGE = *
- NEW: stiff & uncomfortable, no fading, smart looking
- BREAK IN: I start to feel connected, fading structure emerges, you’re allowed into a fancy restaurant still
- *APPROACHING THE TOP: comfortable, all fades are set with maximum indigo left, smart casual
- *STARTING THE DECLINE: your favorite pants, first signs of wear + heavy fading + loss of indigo, maybe casual Friday and weekend (or if you are your own boss)
- WORKWEAR: track pant comfort, rips, tears vintage fade, weekend or house chores (every day of the week if you are your own boss)
- HANGING BY THE THREAD: be mindful when moving, 80’s level of indigo left, when taking selfies for denim head Insta
