IHM-33-OLV - Oiled Cotton M-65 Jacket - Olive
Initially designed for the US military in 1965, the M65 Jacket is a cold weather field coat, seen in movies such as Taxi Driver and Terminator, the M65 is now a firm civilian favourite. This slightly tweaked Iron Heart version remains close to the original, including four front pockets and stand-up collar with a built-in hood, but with additional, useful side hand-warmer and internal pockets, it is also lined with a waterproof Japanese Ventile. The front pockets do not accordian out to remove some bulk and give the jacket a slimmer look.

What's the weight of this one, is it heavier or lighter than previous M-65s?
-
This versus the sateen M-65 - apart from the colour difference (olive-ish vs green) presumably the oiled cotton is intended as a harder-wearing, more water-resistant alternative? Will it wear a bit stiffer and be a bit rougher to the touch? Any warmer/more wind resistant? How about wear/evolution potential between the two? Just trying to get a bead on the differences with a view to picking up one or the other. Sorry if it's been addressed elsewhere.

The oiled cotton is thinner than the sateen, so less warm
The oiled cotton is oiled (obviously) so has waterproofing
They are both Japanese Ventile lined, so windproof and water-resistant
The sateen outer on the IHM-27 is not water-resistant at all so will get wet and heavy, but the ventile will keep you relatively dry underneath
The oiled cotton is a little more starchy to the touch
No idea how the oiled cotton will age I am afraid, though you will see plenty of worn IHM-27s if you search for that SKU on the forumHope that helps

Very helpful, thanks @Alex . I guess it's fair to say the sateen is the more traditional while the oiled cotton is an all-weather twist on the M-65. Each colour has it's appeal too. Between these two, the M-51 and the N-1 I'm heading for a jacket showdown. I'm in a southern hemisphere winter here, so I want 'em all now.

@SKT:
Thanks. Going to be a tough decision between the two. I think it would be a super versatile coat for me here in the Midwest.
I suspect these oiled versions will be excellent in wetter climates, however I am a fan of the traditional design. I have a Melton wool M65 and a black sateen one, so an oiled olive one wouldn’t be an irresponsible purchase, right? [emoji51]

Naw… you owe it to your other two jackets to have one that can fill In during the drizzly days..

Is the material for this jacket designed to be re-coated with an oil or wax based treatment?
-
Thanks @Alex, I am looking forward to buying this jacket once available, just will let someone else experiment with re-coating first.

Just got to wear my IHM-27-OLV for the first time this year! Woohoo! I know it's not quite identical to this new one, but it's close enough for me to feel like I can recommend this to people on the fence. UHF + M65 is a great combo for crisp fall mornings!

What is the weight of the cotton - 12oz, 14oz, 17oz, ?? An earlier post stated lighter than sateen, but exactly how heavy is that? Thanks!
