Ultra Heavy Happy Hour (IHF Virtual Gatherings) Thread

I think I will finish the job I am on, on Friday. So I will try to make an appearance.

@Giles I take it that the fishing trip is a go and you are in your final preparations for your trip.
Enjoy and send us lots of pictures so that we may live vicariously through them.
Actually, we are off to The Bahamas en famille. It is Kira's sister Seicha's wedding (postponed twice already). Kira and Seicha were bought up in The Bahamas and consider it home. 18 years ago, Paula and I took Alex on a diving holiday to Andros, the self-proclaimed Bonefishing capital of the world (which, of course, had absolutely no bearing on the fact that I chose to take the family there on a scuba diving holiday) and that is where Kira and Alex first met ahhhhhh. Kira and Alex left last week because they have important things to do wedding-wise - Scuba dive, sample the wine and shit like that.
Because I am going to a wedding, I need to be on my best behaviour, so we have not packed all our scuba diving gear (BCD's being left behind), and I am hardly taking any fishing tackle at all:
1 popping rod for 'Cuda and Jacks
2 fly rods, both AFTM7 (for Bonefish), a primary and a spare in case I break primary
4 reels I have had my fly line cut in half before by a shark biting through the belly of the line whilst I waded the flats
4 boxes of Bonefish flies - all home tied so very Heat-Robinson, but they'll catch
1 Box of poppers and surface lureThere is a tidal creek/mangrove area about 400 yards from our hut. The Bonefish will move up the creek and into the mangroves on the incoming tide and do the reverse on the outgoing. Timing is absolutely critical, as it is only worth fishing for about 30 mins on the incoming and 40 mins on the outgoing. Once I have the timings worked out (that usually takes a couple of reconnaissance trips to the creek to check on the state of the tide) I can normally guarantee a good shot at a Bone or 2 each time I go. It is absolutely my kind of fishing, super skinny water, lots of snags, difficult casting and hyper spooky fish. I have to fish with 20lbs leader (ridiculously heavy for Bonefish) because I know I will be dragged through Mangroves roots encrusted with barnacles. My best out of the creek was 8lbs, and that was utter mayhem, I bet I ran 100yds in thigh-deep water faster than Usain Bolt could do

@Giles I can't think of 1 reason you shouldn't have a camera strapped to your chest to capture some of the fun you have fishing around the world…
You could even wear it to capture some wedding shenanigans, like Alex dancing wasted.
-
Nope. That is for an AFTM 1 weight. I use an AFTM 8 (on an AFTM 7 rod) line. I "overload" the rod so that I can throw short quick casts. I sacrifice distance, but I don't need distance next week.
I will be using one of these, it is a real collectors piece, I bought it directly from Jack Charlton about 18 years ago (I got a massive bollocking from Paula when she could how much it cost - USD700). But they are now changing hands for USD3,000

I can, I have zero interest in doing that ;). I try to live in the moment, I want to enjoy and experience what is happening to the max. Fucking around with a GoPro would just detract from that. If other's have them, and I am filmed, I'm delighted. I hardly ever take photos of the fish I catch for the same reason.
However, I will try and take a few this coming week, the little creek (it's called Davis Creek) I fish is really where my fishing heart resides…..It's sight fishing but so incredibly difficult and complex, it ticks all the boxes for me.

I am possibly going to try one, but if it takes away from the experience instead of enhancing it, it'll go in a drawer. I can relate to your wanting to experience what's happening to the max.
Over the last 2 years I've been getting my nephew interested (now obsessed) with fishing. The 2 biggest fish and best fights we've had were fish on my line that I gave to him to fight and land. The pure joy of someone getting their personal best fish is better than me catching another one.
That said there's a few that I wish I could relive on video. Our surroundings are a bit less beautiful than the Bahamian mangroves, but not by much.
