Nick’s Boots of Spokane, Washington
-
Had a custom order of half soled renegades show up today in brown waxed flesh. The cut on the throat makes these a little higher volume over my instep than I think can work for me. Also that heel stack is .25-.4" higher than I ordered. Reaching out to them for advice, but in the meantime, thought I'd share some pictures for anyone considering these. Such great leather, might prefer it to the Maryam...
So disappointed in the fit though right now
Edited to add: Nicks are 9C in 55 last and Wesco are 9D. The nicks are definitely narrower for anyone wondering if a Wesco 9D is really a C; it definitely isn't, but the volume is way less.
If anyone wants other comparison pictures just let me know!

Urban Loggers in brown wax flesh
~8 weeks in
Fast break in on uppers
Midsoles shaping in nicely
Incredible boots -
6” Roberts in Brown CXL with about 3.5 months of steady wear. I work in the office mostly so not much wear to show, but they are nice and comfy now.

I just got in my first pair of Chelsea’s. I had always thought I couldn’t pull them off. Nicks came out with a build not long ago and I figured I had to try them out. I ordered a pair of Roughout tan that should be done by late fall… then I see this pair pop up on the ready to ship last week. Pulled the trigger and couldn’t be happier, I really enjoy them.
This is my second pair of nicks, my first is a pair of moc toe 8in boots. The build quality they are putting out is amazing. I’ve got another pair of Chelsea’s on order and a pair of cap toe I may wear for the thunder dome this year. Good stuff

Man those look cool — I really wanna try some Nick's but the vagueness of the MTO situation really turned me off for the time being. On the site it says 18-35 weeks, which is a PRETTY wide f'n range. I emailed them and asked if when I placed an order they could give me a little tighter delivery estimate, and they said no. The customer service experience left me a little miffed, but it's not like I don't still want some, haha... one day.
-
@popvulture having gone through the MTO queue recently, I would count on the estimate being the high end. Then count on that high-end number being when they might enter the production queue. Even in my case reaching out to verify they had the leather on hand to start right away didnt help, and it delayed it another 6 weeks. Then you've got to wait the month or whatever for them to make it. Overall, I'm only barely pleased with Nick's customer service anymore since Gary passed away years ago. They really do not read or listen to concerns and make a load of assumptions, at least in my case. I've got two pairs and don't think I'll ever consider them again.
I'll also say, I've had terrible luck with trying any boots from them that arent in their "core" product line of hot-shot style boots. If you do order, make sure you're ultra clear on everything, the past couple I had came in with heels much taller than expected. I'm also not really convinced that their build quality is the same as it used to be. Certain things look a little cleaner but others obviously look rushed and lazy like having huge untrimmed sections of the midsole that look ultra sloppy to me. My old boots don't have this at all.

@pechelman dude thank you for that info — I definitely wanna hear these sorts of things before (if) I take the plunge. I do like the chunky heels, and in fact that's what attracted me to them. Really just want a pair of fairly stock Roberts, just with a couple of the customizable tweaks.
The exchange was disheartening for something that costs so much. I simply asked if there was any kind of tighter estimate available, but the first response I got was a person basically copying and pasting the info already available on the site. I did my best to not be like "I can read," instead asked for clarification again and basically all she replied with was "sorry, we can't."
I might just end up pulling the trigger on a pair of White's instead, whenever I decide to order a new pair of something. In the meantime I think I should just chill and enjoy what I have.

lol....
They literally copy and pasted me info on how to solve fit issues by adjusting laces and doing the 3-2-1 lacing for a pair of slip on engineer boots. Seriously. They really do assume that no one reads their generally good info so when you bring up an issue even remotely related they just read from a script. It's very frustrating.
Chunky is one thing, but they bordering on high-heels if you arent careful with the options. It looks good/appropriate on a logger style boot but it looks funky on the robert or an engineer imo. I've never found Whites to fit my feet and more specifically, my heels right. The counter hits too low and is also too wide.

Yeah I feel ya. I've heard so many comments about the White's arch being so high that it's given me pause. I do have high arches, but "standing on a ladder rung" doesn't sound awesome. Maybe I can try some on in person sometime.
-
from the couple Whites I've tried, Nicks has a higher arch for me.
It's real and semi-intense to start, but it settles and eases overtime to where it's nice. I had a friend try on my well worn boots and his comment was something to the effect of "it's like standing on a baseball". -
maybe we should ask a mod to move this portion of this thread into the nicks thread?
I will add that the "made to measure" doesnt really exist with Nicks as far as I know. Even when it was me talking on the phone at the same time with Gary and Keith who did fittings, all they'd do is compare their stock options on the shelf to the tracing and pick the least bad one and not do any customizations. This is unlike what Wesco advertises where they do find the best closest last and add on leather caps or whatever to make it custom. They pay more attention to areas highlighted on the fit sheet is all I got from the experiences. Even that first go resulted in them recommending a boot size too long and wide.
The best thing I can say about the recent experiences is that returning and getting a full refund was painless and straight-forward.

@pechelman Moved to the Nick’s thread…

All my nicks are HNW last not 55 so I can’t really comment on the crazy arch. two pairs I’ve actually got are from the ready to ship. A pair of moc toes and these Chelsea’s. I think the build quality on both seem pretty good. I haven’t really talked to customer service much or at all to have any input on that.
I’ve got a pair of cap toe Wickett and Craig double stuffed that should be here in sept some time. That’s the pair I plan to wear In the thunder dome. They were ordered April 1. Lead times def are long but not as bad as wescos. I’ve got a pair of wescos I ordered last aug I’m still waiting on. I’ve got maybe 6 pairs of wescos I’d put my nicks slightly above in build quality and leather thickness etc. the second Chelsea’s I’ve got on order I’ll prob keep as theses seem to be sweet and will enjoy a second pair of them.
I’d also suggest keep and eye on the ready to ship boots I’ve had some luck there
I’ve got one pair of whites and the arch is definitely intense on them but that’s also the only 55 arch I’ve got. I think it takes some getting used to but might be cool.

Love the differing experience and opinions!
I'll add that I tried one HNW last recently and it was very flat footed and sized much longer than my other 55s from them. Felt like clown shoes, very loose, almost tripped over them tbh. Immediately returned and got a refund. They sat unsold for many months in the ready to ship iirc.
The build quality is totally on par for a super heavy duty no frills boot. Definitely has more overkill in it than the few Wescos I've handled, but I haven't seen that many. The Wesco has a bit more finesse and attention to detail in my limited sampling. But your moc toes look fantastic @kkibbey23 !
A little extra of the leather sole is visible though that could have been trimmed a little closer imo. Especially on the inside of the arch and around the side of the heel. -
@pechelman check your DM’s. Here’s my broken in Toscanellos next to my brand new Horween CXL Brown Lou’s. I like them both, but prefer the darker brown.

My second pair of Moc toes showed up while I was gone. These are smooth over roughout in 1964 brown.
There’s a good chance these will be my dome pair this year. I’ve got one more pair coming in a cap toe wickett and Craig double stuffed that’s my other choice.
