There's an interesting article about French Bulldogs at Vanity Fair.

It discusses some of the politics around the breed standard and dog shows in the US. I'm amused by the talk of breed preservation when they've been bred into a corner where they often cannot reproduce without assistance.

I know someone who breeds various rare sighthounds here in Australia, and she once commented that it'll be a sad day when Azawakhs need to be hip-scored. They didn't exist outside of the Tuareg tribes until the seventies or eighties. It's a shame that many dogs have lost their basic functionality.
