Another one of the IHV-16. This time crossing a flooded part of the trail. Beau was very hesitant to cross, but eventually he cut the crap and got on with it.
Mods let me know if the video is not ok and I’ll do something about it.

Thanks gang. @goosehd Beau was a trail riding horse his whole life, but didn’t ride near as often as we ride him. He’s a Tennessee Walker so he is bred to walk quickly for long durations, but he doesn’t have a fast top speed.
That’s just fine with me as my running as fast as possible days are over (was never really my thing anyhow).
Beau is 15 years old, is a great horse that doesn’t spook or give much guff on trail, but with water they can’t see how deep it is, especially since Dreamer went first and is was cloudy/Mucky. He just needed a bit of convincing.

@jordanscollected I worked with a thoroughbred for a couple of years that spooked stupidly easy and for the silliest of things. One day I was walking her back to a paddock after a rain and she saw a puddle that wasn’t there the day before. She spooked and sprinted back to the paddock…I stupidly had the lead wrapped around my hand and went along for the ride until I could get my hand free. Luckily I wasn’t hurt too bad and learned a valuable lesson about leaving the lead loose in the hand and letting the horse go if needed.

@goosehd racing horses like thoroughbreds and jumping/eventing horses are gorgeous and expensive and are always surrounded by people with money. But they don’t hold a candle to a trained trail horse. We’re the poor ones, but our horses are much better trained for the unexpected.
Today in a 2-hour ride we came across the water crossing, parents hiking with their kids in those giant kid backpacks, dogs off leash, deer, downed trees across the trail, and more. An eventing horse would dump their rider and be in the woods in a panic attack.

@jordanscollected That was one of the great things about being at the University of Guelph and the veterinary medical centre was that I could work with a bunch of retired horses and experience a bunch of them.
The horses were kept by the school so that veterinary students could gain experience working with large animals and I was able to spend a few summers looking after the horses as a summer job.

@natehate Guelph was a great place to go to school and in some ways I miss it. The last time I was there was about 4 years ago and was shocked at how much the area has grown.
Maybe I should take a weekend and go back and visit especially as I always loved walking through the campuses arboretum.

@AdamC easy shorts for the win, wearing my khaki ones too today. Waiting for the restock patiently
