So, here it is. First I have to say the my shopping experience with the rugged society was excellent, super fast shipping and packaging!
Well, for the jacket itself I'm fully blown away. It's softer and less thick than I expected, maybe also less warm. The fit is fantastic with a Tee, not sure if I can layer up for winter though. Anyway, I love it and will most likely get a lighter version in spring.
Edit: I can layer an UHF underneath. Snugly but not uncomfortably.
It's the 20oz wool blanket version in tobacco, which is more olive than on the 10oz version apparently.
Hey mate! I'm currently browsing the interweb for the exact same jacket.
Maybe you can help me with your first hand experience. I'm not so sure about sizing and warmth. Do you think this is a true winter coat or more of a three season jacket?
I'm 179cm and between 75 and 80kg. I wear size large in the current lefty od and XL in the duck type 3.. In IH shirts I am usually between L and XL. Do you think I should go for size large or medium in the heavy riders jacket?
Thank you so much!

@RobeOfTheMagi my bit of input is I wear a solid Large in all my IH shirts and jackets. I’m a medium in the freenote jackets I have or have had in the past.
Of course, same with Iron Heart…trust the measurements. I’ve always found Freenote to be great at keeping their measurements updated and accurate.

I'm an XL in IH shirts and Type 3s, being 1,86m and 88 kg. The Freenote Jacket is a Large and fits perfectly, however if I had to work in it or would use heavy layering I imagine I could size up one. So I feel like a size M might work for you if you want a snug fit, but L could be the better choice for layering. There's plenty of measurements to be seen online, maybe they can help you.
If it helps, the fabric feels softer as I expected and the arms are quite roomy, so despite being snug the jacket doesn't restrict movement.

My two cents … I’m an XXL in Western fit UHFs and I took an XL in the riders jacket. I’ve got a room to layer, but not to the point where the jacket looks sloppy in a tee shirt. I think that’s what’s really great about the waxed canvas … it sort of holds its shape and looks good even if you size up.
For reference, I’m 6’2”, 175 lbs.

Thank you all so much gentlemen! Seems like I could go either way M or L.

Nice day for the RJ1. Plus 14oz slub deck pants -
@RobeOfTheMagi I have the riders jacket in a large and it is spot on all over. Am 6’1, 175 lbs and 41” chest. Take XL in Iron Heart UHF and L-XL in type 3’s. I love the jacket. Fav piece of clothing I have ever owned. Warm enough for most days winter in UK though would need a UHF and thermal minimum on for winter days here. I ordered the 20oz alpaca lined but had to sell as it needed to be an XL to do up due to the lining.
Hope that helps. -
Cheers mate! You're slightly taller and heavier than me. I'm still unsure whether to go for medium or large.
The models on the websites usually go for rather slim sizes. But there's pictures and then there's using the jacket in real life.
-
@RobeOfTheMagi I can tell you I had the waxed rider in a size large and it was fine with a UHF under but I wished I had taken a medium like in my other Freenote jackets. With only a tee it was too baggy I thought.
Trust the measurements per usual. Measure a jacket that fits how you'd like this one to fit. Again, those shoulder gussets are genius for chest and shoulder mobility.

I’m 6ft and 87kg, I have an athletic build and could have gone medium for a super slim fit but seeing as I’ve changed my gym routine lately I felt it wouldn’t be long until I needed to size up, I felt the armpits constricted a bit. Swapped out for a large and so glad I did. Looks great with a tee but can get away with a UHF or light sweater too.
Given your height and weight I’d be inclined to go medium. I think your stats are similar on paper to the guy that sells freenote near me. Autuer store on Instagram if you want to have a look at how his fits in medium.
-
@RobeOfTheMagi in case you’re still considering… I’m 6ft, 85kg, 41 inch chest. I’m between Large and XL in IH, depending on the piece. I have this exact jacket and went with Large. With the thicker lining and dense fabric, I think you’d appreciate a touch of extra room as opposed to being too fitted. I’ve tried Mediums in this jacket and find they’re very snug on me. I am a bit bigger than you but I’d lean Large.

Just picked up a pair of their Rio jeans and the fit and quality is off the scale. This pair was a brown indigo and already some electric blue fades coming after just a month. The only pair of jeans I have had that fit me all over 100%. Crazy sizing though like most brands - 34” waist, 32” in IH and 30” in these!
-
@americanathreads Hey mate! I nearly bought the medium but then I figured I'm between sizes which I am often with IH as well. I Think the jacket is either too fitted for layering or so loose on me that it is not really a riders jacket anymore.
-
So, as I said I am so fascinated by the waxed rj1 I had to get an olive 10 Oz version too. It fits a bit looser or might just feel like it, as its noticeably lighter and softer. I guess that's the best of two worlds, as I can layer it with an UHF and still get away wearing it with just a tee in spring.
Sorry for the indoor pictures, I'll try to take better ones soon.
For comparison I added my 20oz version.
