Iron Heart X Simmons Bilt Horsehide Western Shirt - The Pale Rider - Natural
-
X-post from WAYWT. Not much evolution, but then my commute (and training) is with a bicycle, not a motorbike
Staying off any treatment for now, since I am not sure what to think of the shiny look some of you are getting. -
Dig the patina of these treated but I also like the matte finish and soft feel of the untreated. Like @Tobi I am staying away from treatment for the time being but curious of others thoughts/experience on what kind of damage you would be looking at if this was never treated. Also curious the recommended frequency of conditioning (subjective this last question, much like denim wash practices, but I’ve got to imagine there is a sweet spot that is healthiest for the leather). Love you all!

Talking about oils, I’ve just had a golden shower from my brake reservoir. Good way to tell you it’s leaking
Love the color on this one (outside of the oil spray).
Did you treat it with anything or just been wearing it?
-
@Rusty only 2 coats of mustang paste since I got it in September last year. nothing else
-
@flannel-slut I don't have this shirt (and should really stop visiting this thread or else that will change sooner or later) but I'd have thought that general advice for leather garments applies: Treat at least once per year to put some moisture back in the hide, more frequently if needed due to climate, wear, getting caught in heavy rain, etc.
With the right products you can maintain a matte finish. Obenauf's worked well on my Simmons Bilt jacket, which is the same leather as this shirt. I think it depends on the fats in the product being used. Logically, products which are liquid at room temperature will have shorter-chain fat molecules in them, and should in theory penetrate the leather more easily, leaving less behind on the surface of the leather which leads to the shine. That's certainly been my experience with Obenaufs and Mustang P.Water anyway - they soaked right in.
-
Bick4 could probably work well too if you want conditioning without darkness and oily/waxyness
-
Much appreciated on your input guys. I’ll keep the once a year in mind as a baseline

@EdH : when you talk about Obenauf's: did you use the heavy duty, or the oil?
-
@Tobi Sorry, forgot they had a paste too. I used the oil: https://www.ironheart.co.uk/obe-lo.html

P.S. Don't want to cross the streams, but my jacket looks something like this now: https://www.ironheart.co.uk/forum/topic/12881/iron-heart-waywt-2023-edition/963. I received it new last summer, treated it with the Obenaufs oil after a month or so - September 2022 maybe - and has started to get some more serious wear in the fall and this spring.

Just got home from a day wearing it out. Has anyone who has been complimented on this shirt actually heard “nice shirt”? Haha. I honestly only ever hear “nice jacket” and that speaks to how heavy duty this thing is
I love the color/look of yours too. Is yours treated with anything or just wear/tear? I really like the look of the pale leather color with a waxy sheen some of these seem to have/gain. This picture and louisbosco's oil spill pic...the leather looks awesome in these pictures. I am thinking of buying one.
-
@Rusty just wear. I want to hold out on treating this until it’s needed. I just got back from vacation where I got some more wear into it
-
WOW! Looks fantastic! You are pushing me over the edge lol
-
@Rusty its definitely a right idea to get one!
-
Got a ReLoved XL on the way....looking forward to breaking it in and trying to keep it somewhat on the natural colored side
-
Tried this shirt on yesterday. All I can say is that it was glorious. Even the wife commented how amazing it felt.
As much as I liked it, just didn't think I could do this shirt justice with the limited wear it would get from me. Would love something in this leather though. So nice.
